New Pet Advice

Should you be looking to buy a new pet – then there are many factors you need to take into consideration.

Cats

The easiest free roaming pet to look after is an adult cat. Kittens are harder to look after in the initial stages, however with litter trays and stopping them free roaming around the house, things become a bit easier. If you install a cat flap then cats can come and go at will. Cats need clean water daily and fresh food regularly throughout the day, as they like to eat little and often. They will also require injections and annual boosters administered by the Reading vets.

Dogs

Things to consider before buying a dog or puppy include:

  • Garden size
  • Can someone walk it daily?
  • Holidays – who will look after it?
  • Can be expensive
  • Will you want to breed from your dog – if not have it neutered

Dogs require initial vaccinations and annual boosters from the Reading vets in order to keep it healthy. Dogs should not eat chocolate, cheese or milk.

Rabbits or Guinea Pigs

It is possible to keep guinea pigs and female rabbits in the same cage or hutch. The hutch will need cleaning out at least twice a week. Rabbits and guinea pigs should be given from running space away from their hutch, so having a run built is a good idea rather than allowing them to roam free. If kept outside then they will need protecting from the cold in winter.

Fish

Fish can be an ideal pet as they do not require much looking after. However, the equipment at start out can be rather expensive. Purchasing a water pump and air filter will save you from having to clean out the tank every few days. Protect the fish from furniture polish spray if the tank has no lid for the fumes can be fatal.

Whatever pet you decide upon, it is a good idea to get it checked over by the Reading vet. The reading vet is not just there for health issues they are a quick and easy resource to help you give your pet the best possible care.
